The Ivorian Platform for Sustainable Cocoa (PICD) and the Ghana Civil Society Cocoa Platform (GCCP) express deep concern over Fairtrade’s new cocoa Living Income Reference Prices. The platforms, representing numerous cocoa farmers and cooperatives, question the unrealistic yield assumptions used in both country’s which they deemed far removed from field realities.
Despite the importance of this benchmark for producers’ livelihoods, Fairtrade’s process lacked proper consultation with key producer representatives. We urge Fairtrade to suspend the current benchmark and engage in transparent, inclusive dialogue based on actual farming conditions.
